UNIVERSITY PLAN FOR SPORTS HUB IN MACKAY

The announcement by the CQ University on its plans for a sports hub at the CQ University campus in Mackay is welcome news for the sporting community.  The plan includes an aquatic centre, indoor courts and an athletics facilities which includes a synthetic surface track.

Cheryl Dixon, James Grech & Jos Grech were selected from a community meeting held in December 2010 to represent the regions athletics clubs and approached the Mackay Regional Council in February 2011 with the idea of an athletics facility including a synthetic surface track and we proposed the ideal location would be at the CQU site. From there, the MRC arranged a meeting with the CQU and with the representatives to discuss the idea.

CQU had embraced the idea as it fitted well with the plans they had with the site to include more facilities for the growing campus and to make the uni more inclusive with the community for now and the future.

Meetings had continued throughout the year with a scoping document soon to be realised.

We look forward to continuing our input into the project for the benefit of the regions athletes.
