The 'Try the 5' get-active campaign will run from September 27 to October 31 and there will be more than $2000 in prizes up for grabs! 🎁  For more information on the program, vist the Mackay Regional Council webiste, Try the 5 page.

As part of the week 5 activities, 'Walking/Running', the Mackay Athletics Club is hosting a free community event for Track and Field activities.

Saturday 30 October 2021 at the Mackay ARC, 193 Boundary Road, Ooralea.

  • Arrive 1.30pm for 1.40pm role call and group allocation.
  • 2.00pm to 2.30pm - Sprint Races - 60m 5yrs to 7yrs, 100m 8yrs and up
  • 2.30pm to 3.15pm - Field events - 5yrs and up - Sample of Shot Put, Discus and Long Jump
  • 3.15pm to 4.00pm - Steeplechase - 800m 12yr and up, 2000m 14yrs and up, 3000m 18yrs and up (note the barrier height will remain at 76cm for all races)

Please note:  This event is a participation event only and no awards or places are given.

Please bring a Water Bottle, Sunscreen, Hat, Comfortable running clothing, and running type shoes (not football shoes).  NO SHOES, NO PARTICIAPTION. 

WHAT IS STEEPLECHASE?

Athletes negotiate 'Barriers' placed on the track during the distance to run.  Athletes may touch the barrier with thier hands and pull themselves up onto and over the barriers.  They cannot go around or under the barriers.  There are up to 5 barriers placed onto the track, with one barrier placed in front of a water pit.  Atheltes shoes and themselves will get wet during the race.

For the 800m, during the 2 full laps, athletes will need to go over 9 barriers with 2 of those landing in the water pit.

For the 2000m, during the 5 full laps, athletes will need to go over 23 barriers with 5 of those landing in the water pit.

For the 3000m, during the 7 1/2 laps, athletes will need to go over 35 barriers with 7 of those landing in the water pit.

The barrier height will remain at 76cm for all age groups and genders.
